Two Anguillian students have been awarded scholarships at the UWI Open Campus in Anguilla for 2019. The recipients are Hakeera Brooks and Karen Harrigan.
Ms. Brooks’ scholarship is being funded by the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce & Industry. She is enrolled in the Bachelor of Accounting degree programme at the UWI Open Campus in Anguilla and aims to be a Certified Public Accountant. She was one of the selected candidates to represent the Open Campus’ Student Games in Jamaica in May this year. She is a member of the Youngsters’ Football Club and is also engaged in several other community activities.
Replying to the announcement of her scholarship, Ms. Brooks told members of the Selection Committee and the Open Campus personnel: “I am very honoured to have obtained the scholarship, and I know there were many others who wished they had received it. Thank you for selecting me, and I am very happy that I impressed you and that you are proud of me.”
Manager of the UWI Open Campuses in Anguilla and the other British Overseas Territories, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, commented that Ms. Brooks was a well-rounded student with a very high-ranking GPA.
The other Open Campus student, Karen Harrigan, has been awarded the Julian R. Harrigan Memorial Scholarship for a second time. It will enable her to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
Commenting on her scholarship, Ms Harrigan said: “My commitment to community work and youth development is in line with what was Mr. Julian Harrigan’s interest, so I feel that he would be proud that I am the person who received the scholarship. I would like to thank the Selection Committee and the Open Campus for their continued support.”
Dr. Fleming-Banks said Ms. Harrigan was continuing to excel in her studies and was also a well-rounded member of the Open Campus Guild of Students.
