Hon. Premier Mr. Victor Banks is leading a three-man delegation to the World Social Security Forum taking place in Brussels, Belgium, from 14 to 18 October 2019. Accompanying Premier Banks are Mr. Sean Richard, Chairman Anguilla Social Security Board and Mr. Timothy Hodge, Director Social Security. The forum is hosted by the public social security institutions of Belgium.
According to a communique from ISSA (International Social Security Association): “The Forum is the largest and most important international event for social security. Involving more than 1,000 participants, from more than 150 countries, including ministers, administrators, CEOs and senior managers in social security administration, it will provide unparalleled source of exclusive networking, knowledge, and inspiration for ISSA member organizations.
“At times of rapid technological, demographic and economic changes, innovative approaches are needed to meet key challenges and strengthen the positive impact of social security to protect people. Key issues and challenges facing social security, including sessions on innovative strategies in social security administration, will form the programme. A Summit with influential policy-makers from across the world will be among the highlights. During the Forum, the ISSA will also hand out the ISSA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Social Security, launch new and updated professional guidelines for social security administration and present new developments in the ISSA Centre for Excellence.”
Premier Banks will also take the opportunity to hold bilateral discussions with officials from the European Development Fund (EDF) on the possibilities of continued funding post-Brexit. The UK will be leaving the EU on 31 October and whilst the preference is to leave with a deal, the UK Government has taken steps to ensure people and businesses are prepared for a no-deal scenario.
