As you drive throughout Anguilla, you can see the huge amount of work done to recover from the impact of Hurricane Irma just a mere 24 months ago. The time and effort put into this work is easy to see. What can also be seen is the debris that still lingers in parts of the island.
Debris can become missiles in a tropical weather system and this is the reason The National Disaster Management Committee (NDMC), in partnership with Sol and Delta Petroleum, Superior Trucking and Greig’s Trucking, Vanterpool Trucking and Daddy’s Construction, is continuing the National Cleanup Initiative, which commenced earlier this month in West End. We would like to thank the West End, Long Bay, and Cove Villages, Greig’s Trucking, and Superior Heave Equipment Services for their patience and hard work in getting the ball rolling. They did so with very short notice and responded positively, especially in the Long Bay area.
The project continues this weekend on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th September, starting at 7:30A.M. in the Blowing Point and Upper and Lower South Hill areas. The bin will be accessible from 26th to 30th September for the collection of debris.
All residents of the Blowing Point and South Hill villages are asked to make use of this opportunity to get rid of debris left after Hurricane Irma including galvanize, roofing, loose wood, lumber, and zinc trapped in bushy areas as well as derelict structures and containers.
Removing debris is a key ingredient to mitigation and preparedness. As we continue through the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season, focusing on safety and cleanliness can only aid in decreasing our vulnerability to these make-shift missiles.
