During the period of 12 September to 16 September, Anguilla was represented on the Norceca Beach Volleyball Tour circuit, which made a stop in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Janai Gumbs and Rikiesha Leveret represented the women’s team while Calivon Vanterpool and Da’Qwan Fredericks represented the men’s team. Fifteen different countries were represented at this tournament by eleven women’s teams and fourteen men’s teams.
It was Anguilla’s first tour tournament in several years and they were up against fierce competition. The women’s team was pooled in Group B with Nicaragua, the USA, and Curacao. The men were pooled in Group C against Trinidad and Tobago, the USA, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Nicaragua.
Although both the women’s and men’s teams were defeated in all their matches, there were many lessons learned during this experience. Additionally, there were gradual improvements in the way the teams played throughout the tournament. According to some of the players, they “learned a lot” and “it was a good experience”.
Exposure and experience are required to grow in volleyball. The Anguilla Amateur Volleyball Association took a first of many steps to improving our standing in beach volleyball.
