The Anguilla Community College is committed to the development of youth through diverse training and programming.
On the week of July 8th, 2019, the Anguilla Students Climbing by Necessary Design (ASCEND) programme, was introduced to students attending 3rd through 5th form in the upcoming academic year. The programme sought to encourage, inspire and teach students the importance of receiving training or education beyond secondary school. Three (3) young Anguillian college students, Ms. Artesha Richardson, Sharnice and Shaunda Richardson, participated as Tutor Counsellors (TCs) for the programme. Prior to moderating the ASCEND programme, the TCs received training from the ACC’s senior lecturers, who guided and prepared them for what to expect from the programme’s students and how best to manage those expectations.
The programme followed an agenda that afforded participants the opportunity to be a part of seminars including “Why grades matter?” and “How to balance school and a social life?” which was presented by recent Anguillian graduate, Malik Richard. The ASCEND programme also featured a mini College Fair, where students were given the opportunity to speak directly with persons who have attended college or are currently in college.
Participants were treated to local campus tours of UWI Open Campus, the Saint James School of Medicine and our very own Anguilla Community College. The group also travelled to St. Maarten, where they did a tour of the St. Maarten College and visited the AUC Medical School, NIPA and the University of St. Maarten learning about collegiate life, and the steps required to attend college.
The ACC’s ASCEND programme also included Coach Teri Williams, an athletic coach, who had the opportunity to speak to students, particularly those interested in sports and athletics, about the importance of learning to balance both school and sports.
The programme’s week ended with a hike facilitated by the Anguilla National Trust and an impromptu pizza and beach party, where participating students received their certificates of completion and the Tutor Counsellors received certificates of outstanding leadership.
The ASCEND programme’s core belief is that strengthening and expanding high school students’ knowledge of college will enhance secondary education and significantly improve college access, affordability, and completion for all students.
