It appears that more and more persons and organisations, in Anguilla, are taking advantage of health fairs to promote wellness and to administer treatment to persons in need of it.
The latest health fair was held by the National Chronic Disease Unit on Friday, June 28. Ms. Shereena Richardson, the Unit’s Non-Communicable Programme Officer, who manned one of the booths at the fair, described the event as a “Sex Exposition”.
She went on: “It is a collaborative effort between the National Chronic Disease Unit and the Anguilla Tourist Board. The focus is to bring awareness to sexual and reproductive health. We want people to ask questions and to get tested.
“Usually, we have a regional testing day on the last Friday of June every year. We no longer have such a day as a regional activity. What we have is a national day – so Anguilla has its own testing day now. We want people to get tested for HIV and there is health education. We have Zemi Beach House, CuisinArt and Joseph Pradel doing massages. There is also the Social Security Board dealing with maternal and paternal health. We have the Juice Bars of Lydia Paul and Tropical Distributors, represented by Brendon Jeffers, with their healthy drinks. Nagico Insurance is also here providing information on insurance coverage pertaining to health.”
Ms. Richardson added: “Sex Exposition is a combination of two words so there is also condom demonstration in that light as well. What we want to do is to have sex but to have safe sex. That is another aspect of the fair.”
The Health Fair continued into the late afternoon as increasing numbers of persons converged on the Tourism Board’s grounds for the event.
