As sixty athletes from schools in Anguilla and twenty parents prepared to leave the island for the Miami Classics in Miami, Florida, on Thursday, June 13, a US couple, who loves the island and its people, contributed US$7,000 in support of their costly trip.
A cheque for that amount was presented to the Deputy Director of Sports in Anguilla, Mr. Rollins Richardson, by Mr. Cardigan Connor, Parliamentary Secretary, Tourism, Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs.
“I have some friends from New York who have been able to give me some funds amounting to seven thousand US dollars to help our athletes and that will go a long way,” Mr. Connor told The Anguillian newspaper.
He identified the donors as Sarah and Howard Solomon. “They are friends of mine I have known for a number of years,” he acknowledged. “They are frequent visitors to Anguilla. They supported us last year with the Summer Camp and will continue to support us going forward.”
Mr. Connor made the presentation in the presence of the Minister of Social Development, Mr. Evans Rogers, who also expressed his gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Solomon and his best wishes to the Anguillian student-athletes.
