Driven and determined are the qualities that best describe Anguilla Community College (ACC) alumna, Ms Eva Hodge. From the very start, Eva committed to pushing past traditional boundaries – initially achieving a baccalaureate in Electrical Engineering which, even now, is still often considered an untraditional choice for women.
In 2012, Ms Hodge joined the first cohort of graduate teachers to take the Postgraduate Diploma in Education offered at the ACC. This 18 – month diploma provided the pedagogical training to teachers who had already achieved a tertiary education qualification. Eva acknowledged that at times it was difficult working full time as a teacher at Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS) while completing her teaching certification at the ACC. However, she pushed through once again and secured her teaching diploma. “The very light atmosphere and people’s willingness to assist, made a difference.”, Ms. Hodge remarked. “I also enjoyed the social gatherings where we got to interact in a more relaxing environment with lecturers and faculty.”
Eva is a socially aware team player and particularly interested in the development of the youth. She enjoys her role as mentor and graduate teacher in Electrical and Electronic Studies at the ALHCS where she teaches Third to Sixth Form students. Stimulated by community and team initiatives that empower young people, Eva is also committed to the co-curricular activities that are so fundamental in the formation of youth character and direction. This is evinced by her roles as Captain of the Second Anguilla Girl’s Brigade and Vice President of the Anguilla Amateur Volleyball Association.
Eva has also returned to the ACC in a different role – as Lecturer to Sixth Formers completing Pearson BTEC International Level 2 in Construction which includes Electrical Operations as one of its electives. “It has been great seeing the college experience such positive growth over the past 10 years”, said Ms Hodge. Eva looks forward to seeing the college expand into its own facility, and is interested to see what that will mean for current and future students as well as the ACC’s overall course offerings.
Eva Hodge endorses and supports the ACC – “Building People, Community, Nation!”
