Around the world April is recognized as Autism Awareness month and for the iSpeak Autism Society it was no different. This year the organisation’s theme was ‘It’s time to Listen’. When asked why this theme the president responded that it’s time as a people that we do not only hear but listen attentively to the needs of individuals that have been or not diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental challenges. She continued to explain that autism is a lifelong challenge for these individuals who need our support and acceptance so that they can thrive and live successful lives.
On April 2nd the Anguilla community celebrated ‘World Autism Awareness Day’ which saw schools and businesses alike wearing the colour blue. Throughout the month of April iSpeak engaged in radio broadcasts on various radio stations which were streamed live on its facebook page, @ispeakaxa.
Through partnerships with the Department of Youth and Culture and the Ministry of Social Development the iSpeak Autism Society hosted to notable professionals Dr Jennifer Campbell Developmental Specialist and Mr Jadon Knight clinical psychologist specialising in testing, assessment and diagnosis. A total of 16 young people, ranging from 2 yrs -20yrs old, were assessed and diagnosed; however there is a waiting list of children who were unable to be seen at this time. This was the first time that such an undertaking was done on island, which showed that the society is listening to the needs of the population in which it serves. It is the vision of iSpeak to cater to the needs of persons with autism spectrum and other challenges such as ADHD, developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, as well as speech and language disorders.
Parents were relieved that they now have the answer to the challenge that their child is facing. One parent stated ‘I now know what is going on and I am more at peace’. Another expressed that ‘at least now I know how to help and what needs to be done’. Though it was an emotional time for parents they were happy that they got some help as many expressed that they did not have the finances to go overseas to sought answers.
Both specialists also spoke with technical experts in education and the ministry of social development which provided some useful suggestions on what we can do to improve our services on island. Workshops were also planned for educators of the Anguilla school system including teacher assistants who were given a plethora of knowledge and the opportunity to ask questions about students in their care.
The month ended with the “Light It Up Blue Parade and Benefit Concert” at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Center featuring local artists. The artistes gave accolades to the society for their efforts in bringing awareness and advocating for acceptance in our community. Some artistes such as Mr Goddard from Mystical Vibes Band and Mr Bankie Banx pledge their support as they also encourage the members to press on and not to give up.
