Festival Del Mar, now in its 11th year, has become one of Anguilla’s leading festivals conveniently organized for the Easter weekend.
It is a joint effort involving a committee in the Island Harbour fishing village, the Department of Youth and Culture and the Anguilla Tourist Board – along with a number of private sectors sponsors.
This year the Island Harbour Bay environment will be much more inviting and accommodating. This is mainly because the mass of seaweed which washed up on, and contaminated, the beach, last year, despite extensive cleaning operations, is not now expected to be such a worrying factor.
The recent demolishing of an old concrete building, at the eastern side of the bay, not only provides a wider view of the seascape, but offers some additional space for Festival Del Mar.
The festival, which is a marketing tool for the Anguilla Tourist Board, attracts a sizeable presence of tourists and is keenly supported by patrons across the island. The Island Harbour Bay area is expected to be a scene of much traffic, requiring careful driving and parking.
Meanwhile, the following Easter Monday holiday will be celebrated by the Anguilla Boat Race Committee with the usual annual boat-race at Sandy Ground – another big cultural activity on the island. There will also be other community and church-sponsored events at several locations.
