In an effort to build bridges and foster positive relationships between young boys and their adult counterparts, as well as among the boys themselves, the Optimist Club of Anguilla recently reintroduced one of its old favourites, the Brother 2 Brother Programme. The newest iteration of the Programme focuses on boys in grades 4 – 6 of the island’s primary schools. It was held on Saturday 2 March 2019.

Eighteen boys from across the island benefitted from the ‘rap session’, where they were matched with men from all walks of life, who were willing to offer guidance and encouragement to the boys. It is hoped that from this initial contact, the foundation of a future supportive relationship for the boys could develop, especially as they enter their teen years. The first session was hosted by the Anguilla Music Academy, in Lower South Hill, and ran from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, with lunch provided to all the participants just before wrapping up. The Optimist Club intends to coordinate three sessions per year, scheduled around the mid-term breaks, with the men free to link with their little brothers outside of the structured setting organised by the Club.

Thanks are being extended to the several men who willingly made themselves available to spend the morning with the boys. They include Darius James and James MCKinney of the Anguilla Music Academy, Delano Mussington, Rudy Webster, Neil Gumbs, Jaiden Fleming, Henry Butler and Optimist men Stanley Reid and Jose Vanterpool. Several other men also expressed their interest in participating in the programme – going forward – including divers, chefs, medical practitioners, contractors, construction workers, and landscape artists.

The Optimist Club also wishes to thank Roy’s Bayside Grill, J.W. Proctor’s Supermarket, Ashley & Sons Supermarket, Mrs Nola Thomas-John and the principals and parents, who allowed and encouraged their sons to participate. It is hoped that the community will continue to support the Optimist Club in this and other initiatives as they endeavour to live up to their motto of “Bringing out the Best in Children”.
