The Government of Anguilla, through the Ministry of Home Affairs, is to honour another of the island’s revolutionary heroes with a National Funeral in the coming days.
The fallen foot soldier, in the 1967 Anguilla Revolution, is the late Mr. Eugene Fleming of Island Harbour who died on Saturday, January 26, at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
Mr. Fleming was among many loyal and patriot freedom fighters who rallied behind Revolutionary Leader and Father of the Nation, the late Mr. James Ronald Webster, and others, in the dark days of the Revolution.
Mr. Fleming and the other foot soldiers stood guard at the beaches, participated in protest marches, and other events, to ensure the success of the Revolution; the freedom of Anguilla from an oppressive system of administration at the hands of the former Central Government in St. Kitts; and to secure the level of social and economic development Anguilla enjoys today.
He was presented with the Badge of Honour and a Queen’s Certificate in 2013 for his role in the Anguilla Revolution. The presentation was made to him by former Chief Minister, Mr. Hubert Hughes, at the Anguilla Day Official Parade at the Ronald Webster Park.
In recent years, Mr. Fleming served as a Special Constable in the Royal Anguilla Police Force.
He was a well-known string band musician and was nicknamed “Speckle Bird”.
The Ministry of Home Affairs will be issuing the details of the National Service and other pertinent information later on.
