The community group, Bassheads, is a car exhibition club that periodically stages car shows in Anguilla’s parks. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, the President of the club, Rob Petty, noticed that the section of the Orealia Kelly Primary School, where the children used to eat their lunch, was devastated by the storm.
Being a carpenter by trade, Rob decided to pitch in to assist in a restorative effort. He wished he could have restored the entire eating area, but he couldn’t do it on his own. Hence, he decided to construct four durable benches which would facilitate the pupils’ lunch spot in the shade of the school grounds.
According to the Principal, Ms. Marcia Brooks, “Due to Hurricane Irma we had lost our lunch shed. Mr. Rob Petty saw the need, and he did not hesitate to offer to supply the school with four much needed benches. Today, he is keeping to his promise, as he is delivering the first two. Apart from expressing hearty thanks to Rob, I am also grateful to Mrs. Patricia “Knocky” Gumbs who has been supportive in assisting to procure the wood for the benches, as well as keeping track of their construction.”
The Principal said that apart from eating their lunch on the benches, the children will also utilize them as a great place to play their board games on.
Two of the lunch benches were delivered last Friday morning by Rob, accompanied by members of the Bassheads Club, and a couple of its supporters. Bassheads hosts competitions of special cars, demonstrating their unique appearance and exquisite features, with particular emphasis being paid to the fidelity and decibel quality of the cars’ sound systems.
Bassheads have engaged in competitive meets against similar clubs in St. Maarten and Tortola, and Rob declares that as helpful citizens they are always keen in contributing in one way or another to their home communities.
