After a very exciting and eventful year of football in Anguilla, the female football season came to an official close on Saturday, December 15th, with an awards and prize-giving ceremony for the Sunset Homes sponsored Anguilla Female Football League.
The event took place at the Raymond E. Guishard Technical Centre Conference Room. This year’s season comprised all five female clubs: Lil Soldier FC, Shining Stars FC, Superstars FC, De Youngsters FC and Gazelles FC.
After a couple weeks of pre-tournament activities and an intense and competitive display of matches in the league, a new champion was crowned. For the very first time, having come a long way, from not winning any games in previous league season, and only winning the previous year Knockout tournament, De Youngsters FC, were able to catapult themselves and emerge 2018 League Champions. Placing second was Super Stars FC, followed by Shining Stars FC in third place.
During the ceremony, in observing the feat accomplished by De Youngsters FC, Technical Director of the Anguilla Football Association, Mr. Colin Johnson, noted that winning is not everything…in that you may not be winning in the beginning, but more building for the future. He congratulated De Youngsters FC for their effort and insight, while hoping other teams were inspired by them.
Sunset Homes representative, Mrs. Janine Edwards, also extended congratulations to all the players and clubs, stating: “We are proud to see that as girls and women of Anguilla you are grasping your pieces of the football pie and we are reaping the benefits that this game brings, for the player, the team, the community and the nation.” Sher concluded that “Sunset Homes commits to continuing to doing its part to fuel the continued growth and success of women’s football in Anguilla.”
Also speaking at the ceremony was President of the Anguilla Football Association, Mr. Raymond Guishard. He urged the female footballers to continue to cherish what they have, saying it is unique and that female football is very much important, just as male football is in Anguilla.
Following brief remarks, the presentation of monetary prizes to team and individual awards where distributed.
