As the island gears up for what we all hope will be a festive and flourishing ‘tourist season’, the Anguilla Community College (ACC) is inviting recent graduates of the ALHCS to apply for Hospitality Scholarships to pursue the new, UK accredited, Pearson BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Hospitality. Dr Karl Dawson, President of the ACC, announced the scholarships at the BTEC Event hosted last week by ACC students as part of their practical assessment. The President pointed out that BTECs give the opportunity for developing the skills and practice required for work in the hospitality industry, as well as providing the foundation theory and concepts for tertiary education. Dr Dawson emphasized that the BTEC programme at ACC has the tri-partite support of the Government of Anguilla, the Anguilla Community College and the Jubilee Fund through the Governor’s Office.
BTEC stands for the Business and Technology Education Council, and that body continues to develop diverse curricula and levels of qualification that respond to industry standards in areas as diverse as hospitality, cosmetology, and social work. Three major characteristics of BTECs are (1) strong applied learning that makes candidates work-ready, (2) assignment-based assessment (hurrah no cramming for stressful final exams!), and (3) different levels of qualifications ranging from Entry Level (lowest) through to Doctoral level studies so that there is level for Every Body.

The ACC became an approved Pearson BTEC centre in 2016, and currently offers BTEC qualifications in areas related to Business, Construction and Hospitality. It is expected that the ALHCS will shortly begin offering the lower level BTEC qualifications in affiliation with the ACC. It is possible to take BTECs as single unit courses and the ACC will be offering a few that way from January 2019. At the higher levels, there will be Management Accounting, Business Law and Event Management. At Level 2 there will be courses such as Book Keeping for Business and Construction Drawing Techniques. However, recent graduates of the ALHCS, looking for an alternative to the Sixth Form, will be eligible for the full BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate Programmes that can prepare them for entry into BTEC Level 3 and above. Less than 10 Hospitality Scholarships remain available for the January 2019 semester for students who graduated from the ALHCS in 2017 or 2018.

Interested ALHCS graduates or their parents can contact the ACC on 264-476-8395/ 498-8395 or 497-2538 or info@acc.edu.ai to find out more about the scholarship opportunities.
