Mr. Haydn Hughes

Mr. Haydn Hughes is a former employee of the original Cap Juluca, now owned by Belmond Ltd. A few years ago, he served as Parliamentary Secretary, Tourism, in the Anguilla United Movement Government. He was one of the many persons at the grand opening of Belmond Cap Juluca on Monday, December 10.

There he spoke to The Anguillian about his previous involvement in the property – and his support for it under its current ownership.

“Fresh out of High School, this is where I started – landscaping and watering plants as I worked my way up,” he recalled. “This was the last place I worked in the hospitality sector. I was an executive responsible for a number of departments.

“But this is really an exciting time to see Cap Juluca whole again. You know that for many years it was rife with many issues, but now Belmond has come and they have put their money where their mouth is. They have made a significant investment, and it is incumbent on the people of Anguilla – all of us – to assist Belmond to see a return on their investment and to ensure that Cap Juluca grows from strength to strength.
“I believe this is new beginning of great things to come, and I just want the staff and the management of Belmond Cap Juluca to know that I am on board. I am a Julucan at heart, and I believe in Cap Juluca and in their product.

“I know the General Manager they have right now. I have been privy enough to get to know him, and I know they have a good leader: someone who listens and who understands that it is about people. And once you put people first then everything comes after.

“So I just want to congratulate Belmond, the people of Anguilla, and the management and staff at Belmond Cap Juluca for a job well done. And I look forward to great things.”

The General Manager of Belmond Cap Juluca, Mr. Tiago Sarmento, who was standing nearby, commented: “I appreciate it.”
