As part of the 16 Days of Activism celebration, FLOW, the leading telecommunication company, collaborated with the Gender Affairs Unit, Government of Anguilla, The Education Department and The Ministry of Education and hosted the 5th annual FLOW Young Girl’s Chat, on Thursday, November 29th 2018 – Under the theme “Speak up and Speak Out!”.
This evening session was hosted by FLOW’s Retail Associate Shakeema Carty and Guest Speakers Ms Sherise Brooks, Ms Erimel Franklin and Mrs Tamara Pradel who brought the theme alive in their riveting “chats”.
The topics discussed were “Confidence and Looking the part”, “How to prepare for an interview” and “Social Media like a Boss!”.
The young ladies, ages 13-17, ranging from forms 3 – 6 from the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School, various community centres, and Girls time (from ALHCS), benefited from an engaging, encouraging and inspiring afternoon session.
“Our guest speakers this year, young women from the community, who in their own rights are inspirational, truly engaged the young women and brought our topics to life through interactive conversation. It is our corporate responsibility to ensure that we inspire our young women to be confident, leading women. As a company that encourages social media we also wanted to ensure that we task our young ladies with the tools to ensure that it is used wisely and constructively. I extend a huge thank you to Ms Brooks. Ms Franklin and Mrs Pradel from the Management and staff of FLOW.” said Commercial manager, Jade Reymond.
She continued “We couldn’t think of a better way to partner with the Gender affairs unit of the Government of Anguilla, and Dr Ronya Foy- Connor for including us in the celebration of the 16 days of Activism and thank them for the opportunity. The ladies from Confetti Dust Studio, Twyla and Latoya, a warm thank you for assisting and supporting the event. A special thank you is extended to the ALHCS and Principle Mrs Rita Carty, Mrs Vanessa Thompson, Remah’s Delights, Mrs Challenger and the Tea Ladies. Much encouragement is fostered when we work together. The group of women who spoke at the event are passionate and inspiring. I am sure that the young ladies left feeling motivated and inspired. That was the purpose. FLOW is pleased to be able to host this event. We look forward to doing this as often as we are presented with the opportunity.” “It’s a joy to see an event that started out as a simple idea turn into a viable programme that has impacted hundreds of girls over a 5-year period and counting. These teenage girls benefit from the wisdom of women who are pioneers in their fields. These opportunities are what I thrived on as a teenage girl and I am sure that it is just as powerful for the young women of today. I thank Jade and FLOW for allowing me, on behalf of Gender Affairs, to facilitate a small but impactful moment in these young girls’ lives.” Said Ronya Foy-Connor, Gender Development Coordinator of the Ministry of Social Development of the Government of Anguilla.
