Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (IMPACT Justice) sponsored six participants to attend the Consolidation of Laws training programme conducted by The Centre. IMPACT Justice project is being funded by the Canadian Government and it seeks to help reform the justice sector in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries.
The training was held at the Centre’s office located at the Five Mar Building, Albert Lake Drive, on 8th and 9th November, 2018. The workshop was attended by the following participants:
1. Ms. Claudina Ryan representing the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Antigua & Barbuda;
2. Ms. Vanessa Mark representing the Office of the Attorney General’s Chambers, Montserrat;
3. Ms. Natasha Williams representing the Ministry of Justice & Legal Affairs, Antigua & Barbuda;
4. Ms. Myra Williams representing the Nevis Island Administration, Nevis;
5. Ms. Althea Campbell representing the Legal Department of the Nevis Island Administration, Nevis; and
6. Ms. Lydia Elliott from St. Lucia.
The programme entailed insightful discussions on numerous issues affecting the consolidation process, such as:
• Some of the complications of incorporating amendments into the principal Act,
• How to address new and repealed legislation,
• Workflow problems that can derail this process.
The programme included a new component on collaborating and structuring work flow using cloud technology. The Centre uses this technology to store and edit its electronic files online with Box.com. Training Facilitator and Manager of the Centre, Ms. Yolande Dash, stated that this technology fosters a more productive and collaborative workforce, while at the same time safeguarding the law revision database from destructive forces. The Centre commenced using cloud technology two years prior to Hurricane Irma and was able to reap the benefits of this technology in the aftermath of the hurricane.
The training concluded with a closing ceremony which was held on Friday 9th November, 2018. Acting Attorney General, Mr. Ivor Greene, applauded the Centre for continually providing this valuable training and also for introducing innovative methods to the law revision processes. Ms. Althea Campbell from Nevis, spokesperson for the participants, thanked the Centre for a very informative training session and also thanked IMPACT Justice for providing them with this training opportunity.
