Dear Editor:
There has been much discussion on the airwaves of late regarding the subject of anal sex – in fact enough to last me a lifetime. I now feel very well versed on the subject. Thank you.
Whomever adults choose to love, and whatever two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own bedroom, is surely their own business. Why would it be anyone else’s? Talking in a derogatory manner about members of our community is not going to stop some people of the same gender loving one another. All it will do is drive them underground making them feel isolated and alienated.
The discussion has also made the argument that people should not be gay because it would not be good for their mental health, citing increased suicide rates in support of their argument without, ironically, realising that it isn’t being gay in itself that increases rates of suicide – but in fact it is the very same homophobic attitudes and discrimination which are being portrayed on the airwaves. It has been shown that in countries or communities which are more accepting and less judgemental about homosexuality, suicide rates in those communities have dropped significantly. It begs the question, why would anyone ‘choose’ to be a homosexual in the knowledge that he/she will be faced with a life of discrimination and prejudice?
