On October 17-19, 2018, 15 members of the Health Authority of Anguilla (HAA) management participated in a dedicated session of “Leaders Leading Leaders” held at the Anguilla Community College facilities on George Hill. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Melinda Goddard, principal of ClienTell Consulting.

The retreat afforded participants the opportunity to sharpen their perspectives on a shared vision and values for the future; to examine ways to enhance the “client” experience when seeking care and services; and to develop strengths in taking on challenges and inspiring the organisation so as to lead more consistently in everyday interactions. Refresher modules on approaches to engage, actively listen, coach, and encourage the members of their various departments were also included. In turn, several sessions emphasised the importance and collective benefits of working across functions as a leadership team, beyond the focus of managing each function unto itself.

“This workshop was very educational, inspiring, [and] self-searching; therefore, it left me with the zeal to make a difference and be a part of a bigger team to bring about that change,” one manager remarked in evaluating the class. Another noted that the retreat, “…opened my eyes to ways I can improve my leadership skills… [and] change/improve my department and build the team at large.”
Mrs. Maeza Demis-Adams, HAA Chief Executive Officer, summarised some next steps by saying, “We’re going to build on this retreat by implementing the initiatives our groups recommended in these breakouts! These managers will lead them, and we have already committed to dates and ways to keep this momentum going after this session!”

Both the Health Authority and ClienTell Consulting would also like to thank the Anguilla Community College for donating the use of the College classroom and facilities for this seminar, which was a public service contribution originally proposed by Ms. Goddard for leaders in the Government of Anguilla to help recalibrate and move forward in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.
