The Inland Revenue Department, of the Government of Anguilla, is continuing to play its part in reaching out to the business sector on its roles and responsibilities with respect to compliance with the laws.
On Tuesday, staff from the Department met with persons from the Accommodation sector on various matters including Business/Hotel Licenses, Accommodation Tax, Tourism Levy, the Interim Stabilization Levy, Penalties and Interest Charges, Enforcement, Compliance and Food Handlers’ Permits.
Speaking to The Anguillian following the meeting, Mr Kiel Connor, Comptroller of Inland Revenue, said: “Well the main purpose of the forum was to provide an opportunity to share information to the respective hoteliers regarding the application process, and what we expect from them, because tax-payer education is very important in promoting voluntary compliance.”
He further said, “We have newspaper columns, Facebook, Radio tips to ensure that persons know what their responsibilities are. Voluntary compliance is very important – it’s not just about the heavy stick. We know who are non-compliant but we want to give everybody a fair chance to know what their obligations are – and failure to do so will result in us applying the relevant law.”
When asked specifically about the Interim Stabilization Levy, whether persons are paying the levy, Mr Connor said, “The compliance has a lot more to do with persons who are not filing, and we are doing a better job now of reaching out to those customers and getting them into compliance but, overall, we are seeing an increase both in filing and in payments.”
There are approximately 183 Accommodation entities registered in Anguilla.
