Ms. Codisha Webster of Welches has been awarded the 2018/2019 Julian R. Harrigan Memorial Scholarship Award. The announcement was made at a special ceremony on Monday, 1st October, at the UWI Open Campus Anguilla.
Ms. Webster, who is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, is the third recipient of the Award. Passionate about the welfare of children, she is a former member of the Youth and Children’s Ministry at the Christian Fellowship Church. She is an active member of the UWI Open Campus Guild of Students – Anguilla Chapter, and served as Academic Representative on the 2017/2018 Executive. A high-achieving student, Ms. Webster was presented with the Guild Chairperson’s Award for her outstanding academic performance in Semester Two 2017/2018.
On hand to witness the event, and offer their congratulations, were members of the Julian R. Harrigan Scholarship Committee, Mr. Stanley Reid, Mr. Carl Harrigan and Mrs. Meredith Hodge-Connor, UWI Open Campus Anguilla Representatives, Dr. Phyllis Fleming Banks and Ms. Patricia Bryan, as well as representatives of the Harrigan Family – Mrs. Brenda Proctor and Mr. Quincy Harrigan.
Committee Member and brother of the late Julian R. Harrigan, Mr. Carl Harrigan, presented the Scholarship Certificate to Ms. Webster and applauded her for her academic excellence and commitment to social development. Speaking on behalf of the family, he said, “I am sure Julian would be proud of your achievements, and we hope that you would make us even prouder by continuing to excel in your studies and in community service.”
Committee Chair, Mr. Stanley Reid, also congratulated Ms. Webster, pointing out that the Scholarship Committee was impressed with her academic performance and was sure that she would do justice to the Scholarship.
Manager for the UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories, Dr. Fleming-Banks, offered congratulations on behalf of the Site and thanked the Committee Members, Mr. Stanley Reid, Mrs. Verna Fahie, Mrs. Rosena Brooks, Mrs. Meredith Hodge-Connor and Mr. Carl Harrigan, for their diligence in the selection of the 2018/2019 recipient of the Scholarship.
In her response, Ms. Webster expressed her appreciation to the Committee Members, the Staff of the UWI Open Campus Anguilla, as well as her family and friends and all those who have supported her on her journey. She also pledged to continue working hard to do justice to the Scholarship.
The Julian R. Harrigan Memorial Scholarship was established in 2016 by the UWI Open Campus Anguilla and the UWI Alumni Association – Anguilla Chapter in honour of the late Julian R. Harrigan who served as University Representative/Resident Tutor for some eighteen (18) years. A former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Administration, he was also very involved in youth and social work, as well as the cultural life of the island. The Scholarship is intended to assist deserving students enrolled in the Social Sciences including Social Work, Youth Development and Public Administration Programmes at the UWI Open Campus Anguilla. Recipients to date include Ms. Kareen Harrigan (2016/2017) and Miss Jackie Harrigan (2017/2018).
