Under the heat of a mildly sweltering sun, a small but appreciable crowd gathered on the grounds of the Scouts & Guides gazebo at 4:30 on Wednesday, August 22, to get started on the now popular Walk to Freedom with Trinidadian native, Errol Fabien.
Anguillians have walked and marched for many causes in the past. Now, we have come together to join with Mr. Fabien in walking against the scourge of tormenting addictions. The two-hour afternoon walk, along the streets of The Valley, Stoney Ground, Wallblake and George Hill, gave recognition to a mission, to which Errol has committed, to silently walk in the towns of 15 Caribbean islands while meditating in prayer for the release of those who are held in bondage by addictions — especially drug addicts.
The significance of Errol’s walks is that, as he said, he was led to do it in observance of his thirty years of freedom from the oppressive chains of drug addiction. Thus, this is a sort of “anniversary of thanksgiving” on his part, while he walks the islands’ streets in quiet prayer for the release of others who are held captive by chains of addiction – and living lives of slavery to the fowl habits that keep them bound.
Anguilla was the 7th stop on his walking mission. Islands previously walked were Cuba, Belize, Jamaica, Haiti, St. Kitts and Antigua, and Errol’s walk is ongoing.
