The Teachers’ Resource Centre was packed to capacity for the 2017/2018 UWI Open Campus Continuing and Professional Education Certificate Presentation Ceremony on Thursday, 26th July. The celebration in honour some ninety Participants in the University’s local programmes was witnessed by family and friends, as well as the Course Facilitators and UWI Open Campus Anguilla Staff. The ceremony also included the commissioning of the 2018/2019 Executive Members of the Anguilla Chapter of the UWI Open Campus Guild of Students and marked the end of activities for the 2017/2018 academic year.
The programme began with a special rendition of the National Song by ten-year-old Miss Allanis Hodge and the Opening Prayer by Senior Magistrate and Course Participant, Ms. Ivenia Benjamin. Welcome remarks came from Manager for the UWI Open Campus BOT Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, who highlighted the mission of the Open Campus in meeting the needs of the local communities through its local face-to-face courses, as well as the established online programmes.
Acting Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Dawn Reid brought greetings on behalf of the Ministry of Education. Mrs. Reid congratulated the Course Participants on their commitment to lifelong learning and taking advantage of the continuing education programmes offered by the UWI Open Campus.
Facilitators Mrs. Aunika Webster-Lake (Supervisory Management), Mr. Colin Johnson (Conversational Spanish), Ms. Shenique Clare (Occupational Health and Safety), Mr. Darwin Hazel (Mathematics) and Mrs. Vanessa Croft-Thompson (Mastering English) shared briefly on the aims of their courses. Representatives from each cohort in turn shared their experiences and paid tribute to the professionalism and excellent delivery by their Facilitators. These included Roxanne Webster and Ezra John Jagaba ((Supervisory Management), Marejah Smith and Sagee Williams (Conversational Spanish), Melissa Hodge (Occupational Health and Safety) and Icilma Itasha Webster (Small Business Management).
The members of the Occupational Health and Safety Class, who captured the 2018 Superior “Safety Presentation GOLD Award” and the “Superior Safety Overall Award” at the 2018 National All Hazard Risk Reduction Safety Fair, also presented their award-winning jingle.
Teacher Colin Johnson and members of his Conversational Spanish Class entertained the audience with an energising Spanish folk dance.
The Ceremony ended with the induction of the 2018/2019 Executive Members of the Anguilla Chapter of the UWI Open Campus Guild of Students – Kemoloy Murphy, Charlene Roach, Naomi Williams, Soya Ward Williams, Elissa Williams, Leah Hughes, Tiffany Moore, Melissa Harrigan and Justina Bazil. Site Administrative Assistant, Miss Tesia Harrigan delivered the vote of thanks.
