The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla is continuing its collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development to provide training for community-based workers on Anguilla. The latest training on Participation Learning and Action (PLA) and Community-Based Research Techniques ran from 20th to 24th August.

This certification training was a follow-up to the UWI Post Disaster Community Psychosocial Intervention Training and the UNICEF Return to Happiness sessions conducted last year.

The training targeted those whose work evolves around and involves the family, children, youth and vulnerable groups in the community. The goal is to strengthen the knowledge and skills base in community-based assessment and interventions as a means of empowering community members to achieve specified goals. The expected outcome is that Youth, School, Church and Community Leaders will be equipped with basic competencies to work effectively with community members utilising appropriate community-based principles and techniques.

The training was organised by Community Services Planner in the Ministry of Social Development, Mrs. Hyacinth Bradley, who will also conducted some of the sessions. The other facilitators were Mrs. Feona Charles from the UWI Mona Social Work Unit (Caribbean Internship Programme) and Gender Development Coordinator, Dr. Ronya Foy-Connor.

During a brief opening ceremony on Monday, 20th August, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development, Dr. Bonnie Richardson-Lake, welcomed the participants and expressed appreciation to the UWI for continuing the partnership.

In her remarks, Manager for the UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, said that the UWI was pleased to continue the collaboration because it was part of the university’s ongoing commitment to the development of stronger communities.

This thirty-hour training concluded on Friday, 24th August with a Certificate Presentation Ceremony at 3:30 p.m. at the Conference Room of the Football Stadium.
