The National Disaster Management Committee through the Mitigation Working Group of its Strategic Planning Sub Committee conducted two Fire Prevention, Hazard Identification & Safety Awareness Training sessions for individuals in the private sector.
Several adult probationers of the Department of Probation and employees of the Miriam Gumbs Senior Citizen Home were the recipients of the training sessions.
The Facilitators for the training were Messrs. Omari Bourne and Romaro Richardson from the Anguilla Fire & Rescue Service and Mr. Alwyn Richardson from the Department of Disaster Management.
The main objectives of the training were to provide methodology for identifying, reporting and monitoring potential hazards and risks and implementing the appropriate controls, conducting risk assessments in the workplace and Basic Fire Prevention techniques. Participants were also afforded techniques in developing evacuation planning and the proper use of fire extinguishers. According to the facilitators, Fire safety training can teach workers how to recognize fire hazards, conduct a fire safety risk assessment, prevent a workplace fire and respond effectively if a fire occurs. The training offered is important as one of the “root causes” of workplace injuries, illnesses and incidents is the failure to identify or recognize hazards that are present, or that could have been anticipated.
Other recent beneficiaries from similar training were employees of the Brenda’s Tender Loving Care, Rose Wood Centre, the Blowing Point Youth Development Centre, Eleos Centre, West End Community Centre, Pond Ground Centre, Island Harbour Care Centre, the Hope Community Centre, local Pre Schools, Day Care Centres and the Adventist Development Relief Agency (ADRA).
The National Mitigation Working Group and its partners continues through the facilitation of these and other similar workshops to demonstrate commitment to promoting safe and healthy workplaces, protecting life and reducing injuries from hazards.
