Road Pond, Sandy Ground
Road Pond, Sandy Ground

Below is a scene of Road Pond, Sandy Ground, with salt deposits at the eastern bank area. With the present hot sun and low rainfall, salt production might probably havebeen at its highest level at this time of year.

The industry, which has seen regular shipments to the oil refineries in Trinidad, many years ago, by the Anguilla Road Salt Company, was eventually closed down. The cheaper salt from Cuba and the unavailability of boats travelling between Anguilla and Trinidad were believed to have been some of the reasons for the closure of the salt industry.

Considerations were given over the years, to find a means of utilizing the Road Pond for some suitable, commercial and profit-making development project. Until that day comes, the 98-acre pond will continue to simply serve as a bird-life sanctuary.
