Supporting Anguilla’s Talented Young People
Dear Editor
I was recently asked what is Anguilla’s greatest asset? What does Anguilla have to offer? Without hesitation I replied, “Our People”. Anguillians excel intellectually, athletically and artistically, and when given the opportunity leave an impressive mark locally, regionally and internationally. We may be a small island, but our talent and resilience are immeasurable, exceeding that of richer and more developed countries.
The Youth of Anguilla continue to make us proud of our heritage and island paradise. Notably, Zharnel Hughes, this year’s fastest man, and Shara Proctor in athletics, Jhamar Hamilton selected to the West Indies cricket team, Hasani Hennis convincingly winning the 2018 John T. Memorial Cycling Race, DeAnna Mussington and Amalia Wattey performing well in singing competitions in the UK and US, respectively, and Omari Banks, our musical ambassador to many countries and nations.
But especially impressive is the accomplishment of Miss Anguilla, Dee-Ann Rogers, winning Miss Universe Great Britain. She embodies what is truly Anguillian: Intelligence, persistence, determination, creativity and beauty. Her crowning achievement makes us extremely proud. Dee-Ann is passionate about Anguilla, and is motivated to help Anguilla succeed socially, culturally, legally and politically. We wish her God’s Blessing and continued success in her study of Law and her outstanding representation of Anguilla on the world stage.
It is stories like these which make it easy to stand up for Anguilla and be proud of our native land, because there are so many other outstanding Anguillian stories and accomplishments yet to be realized. I only hope that we continue to support our young people, and provide avenues for them, not only to have a fighting chance, but to excel, and therefore reach their full God-given potential.
Thank you.
