The Anguilla National Trust, which is involved in several aspects of conservation and wild life habitat work on the island, may be interested in knowing that a green iguana, probably one of the species from outside the island, has made its way into The Big Store in The Farrington. It is believed that it was born somewhere near the building.
The baby iguana was found among a stack of merchandise and was eventually caught by a customer, Yufuf Abdul Ali, using a stiff plastic string with a slippery knot at one end which he craftily placed over its head.
“I learnt the art during my school days and put it to the test today to catch this baby iguana which may be three weeks old,” he told The Anguillian. “While it may be a species from outside the island, the fact that it was born in Anguilla – it is therefore now a local creature.” A question to be answered, on the other hand, is whether or not it was brought in among the cargo imports.
Still with the string around its neck, Ali placed the young iguana in a carton box and gave it to Dorian Abbott, an employee at The Big Store, who said it would be kept as a pet.
