This week a team of Anguillian cricketers left the island to join their regional counterparts in the Leeward Islands Under-19 tournament in Montserrat. They were preceded last week by a number of Under-17 players who competed in the opening games there from June 22-26.
The fourteen Under-17 Anguillian cricketers, who have just completed their exams at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, were: Damien Hodge (captain), Jaivani Carty (vice-captain), Damani Hodge, Soloman Goharran, Eric Gowkarran, Christopher Baijnauth, Cheidyn Bryan, Akeem Tittle, Samuel Connor, Dion Williams, Jaenharri Hodge, Kaylem Richardson and Omar Hodge. They were accompanied by Trevon Stevens (coach), John Millington (manager), Jacob Parles (parent) and Kathleen Hodge.
Mr. Ralph Hodge, a noted member of the Anguilla Cricket Board, spoke to The Anguillian newspaper late last week at the Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport.
“It’s a good bunch of youngsters and one would expect that they are going to perform well,” he said. “These guys have been playing cricket for a while and it is a steppingstone in their career of going on to bigger things in cricket.”
The Leeward Islands team is made up of St. Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, Montserrat and Anguilla, The British and US Virgin Islands and St. Martin/St. Maarten, but there is a promising player whom Anguilla will ensure that he gets in the tournament.”
Mr. Hodge added: “Our new President, Mrs. Anne Parles, has brought the financing side much tighter – something that we struggled with in the past and she has been very energetic. We are confident that we will continue to make a success of cricket in Anguilla.”
