As the elected representative for the Road North constituency which the late Sir Emile Gumbs represented for some twenty-seven years, on my own behalf and that of the people of that constituency, I offer my sincere condolences to his wife Lady Gumbs, his children, grandchildren and other relatives on the sad occasion of his passing.
Sir Emile Gumbs, the only Anguillian thus far to have had the honour of a knighthood being bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II, which I had the honour to witness, was a true patriot of Anguilla whose value, worth, commitment, dedication and service to the people of this island will indelibly remain with us for generations to come.
Sir Emile served the people of Anguilla with distinction and devotion in many capacities as a renowned and qualified boat captain, as an Executive of the family-owned salt industry business which, at the time, was the only viable industry to assist in putting food on the table for many Anguillian families. He was a dedicated and committed leader who played an important role in advancing the cause of Anguilla for a brighter, better and more prosperous future for all Anguillians, especially during the Anguilla Revolution, from 1967 until his retirement from active politics in 1994.
It was under Sir Emile Gumbs’ mantle of leadership, with his responsibility for tourism, that the direction for the socio – economic vision for the island was more robustly defined as the Government took the decision to embark on the upmarket branded type of tourism which opened up Anguilla under the theme ‘Tranquility wrapped in Blue’ to the international market.
He will be remembered for his gentle, humble and unassuming character of strength, resilience, wisdom and compassion but, above all, his genuine love for his people.
He was particularly close to the constituents in North Hill and Sandy Ground but deservingly so as these were the communities where he grew up and lived for most of his life. I know that there was always great love and respect for him – especially for his generosity, care and concern shown to them for their well being.
I am particularly happy that over the past couple of weeks I have been able to visit him. I have had the good fortune of working along with Sir Emile for a number of years, as a former public servant, and will be forever grateful for the wise counsel and guidance that I was able to receive from him as he was always very approachable and easy to talk with. In particular, I note that because of his advice and guidance, along with that of the late Hon Idalia Gumbs, I was able to retain the piece of property on which my house stands today offering one of the best scenic views on Anguilla. This came about because an expatriate wanted to pay whatever we asked for it and I thought that if it was good for him – it was even better for us.
To his dear loving wife, children and grandchildren and other immediate relatives and friends, it is my heartfelt prayer that the good Lord, of all grace and mercy, will strengthen comfort and sustain you during this most difficult time. And I ask that we all offer our support to them with our prayers. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
