Ms. Karen Harrigan and Ms. Jackie Harrigan are two students attending the Open Campus of the University of the West Indies in Anguilla who were both awarded the Julian Harrigan Memorial Scholarship. (The recipients were not related to him.)
They expressed their thanks and appreciation as part of the celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the UWI, and the recognition of 20 former Anguillian students of the UWI who blazed the trail for other national students.
Ms. Karen Harrigan, the first recipient of the scholarship award, said in part: “Thank you to the family of the late Julian Harrigan, a pioneer in the cause of higher education in Anguilla, and a giant particularly in creating a path to tertiary education for those, like me, who would otherwise not have the option of travelling overseas to attend college or university.
“I am exceedingly grateful to the Julian Harrigan Scholarship Committee for selecting me as the first recipient of the Julian Harrigan Scholarship Award. My thanks also goes to the local UWI Chapter, in particular to Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, for their coordinating efforts in respect to the administration of the award. I knew Mr. Harrigan as a passionate advocate for both youth and adult education in Anguilla. Without him, much that we enjoy today, in terms of Open Campus and the excellent opportunities for furthering one’s educational goals, would not be in existence. It is fitting that his name should live on in the concept that he richly advocated and bestowed to future generations of the importance of continuing education – that education is key and life.”
Speaking briefly, Ms. Jackie Harrigan said: “Upon receiving this esteemed award, I was ecstatic but most importantly I am deeply grateful for this scholarship because it allows me to further my education and to be a proud ‘Pelican’ (the symbol of the UWI).”
