Ms. Penny Turilli is a native of Colorado who has been residing in Anguilla with her two children, Emma, age 16, and Thomas age 13, for almost a year. Both children are competitive gymnasts, and they persuaded their mom to ship down some of their gymnastic equipment so that they can continue practicing while here.
It turned out that they have gotten several children of the community to be interested in gymnastic skills, and now several youngsters, between the ages of 4 and 18, are practicing gymnasts along with Emma, Thomas and their 18-year-old friend, Garvey Tackling, who is a young local coach. Their gym is located in Island Harbour, between the Sunny Time Supermarket and the St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.
Speaking recently with The Anguillian, Penny said: “We see some 30 children twice a week who come to practice. It’s been a very rewarding experience on both ends. I myself coach, along with Emma, Thomas and Garvey. So, on Tuesdays and Thursdays w,e are usually busy with four different groups who get to experience both boys’ and girls’ gymnastics with the different pieces of equipment that we have. The kids have become more disciplined, more flexible and stronger.”
Unfortunately, the Turillis are scheduled to leave the island in June so that Emma can resume her schooling in Colorado. Penny is, therefore, inviting anyone who has an interest in coaching gymnastics to come forward and continue with the classes while they are gone, especially for the sake of the kids who are so enthusiastic about the sport.
Penny says that they anticipate moving back to Anguilla one day, but she notes that she would regret leaving the equipment behind in an inactive state. Therefore, she is seeking volunteers who would continue with the training in their absence.
She says she invites anyone who is interested in carrying on the coaching to contact her via WhatsApp at: 1-970-331-4334.
