The Anguilla Evangelical Association wishes to register its firm opposition to the plan to legalise “small amounts of cannabis”.
We are very concerned about the incarceration of young men for possession of a dime bag of marijuana and the attendant criminal record that forever clouds their future.
So yes – something must be done. But in view of a plethora of critical factors we insist there are more than Option A and Option B. We have no problem with the medical benefits of carefully prescribed marijuana extracts. But this sudden proposal that surprisingly boycotts public consultation ignores too many dangers. And these dangers are not red herring scenarios but actualities that exist in nations and states where this proposed measure has been enacted.
Despite Dr Sanjay Gupta’s apparent fascination with even recreational marijuana, the stark health and social realities of the recreational use of this drug and what “decriminalization of small amounts” spawn are too ominous for us to march obediently to the beat of this drum.
We will address this matter more fully next week.
