On Thursday 22nd March, 2018, students from the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School competed in the “Annual Healthy Lifestyles Inter-house School Quiz Competition.” This competition sponsored by the Health Authority of Anguilla is a collaborative effort, between the Nutrition and Health Promotion Department and the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School, to improve health awareness among adolescence in our community.

The Quiz is conducted in three phases. The first focuses on improving health awareness by educating the students on various health related topics. This is conducted by health professionals who facilitate education sessions and demonstrations during the Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) classes for all 4th Form students over a six-week period. In phase two, students’ aptitude for participation in the Quiz are evaluated by conducting a Preliminary test. Students from the five houses with the highest overall scores are then selected for participation in the main Quiz.

Phase three is the hosting of the Annual Healthy Lifestyles Inter-house School Quiz which was held at the Church of God Holiness Church. Briana Battick of Orange House emerged victorious as the individual champion and was awarded a prize sponsored by Coral Reef Bookstore.

At the end of this keenly contested competition, Purple House placed third while second place went to Maroon House with Orange House emerging as the overall winner of the closely contested competition. The first place winners were Esmaily Mercedes Hodge, Briana Battick, Mavicia Buchanan and Taijah Hodge-Connor. These successful students were awarded a free lunch compliments of English Rose Restaurant in The Valley. The Health Authority of Anguilla being the main contributor to this initiative sponsored the prizes for the first, second and third place winners.

On behalf of the Health Authority of Anguilla, the Nutrition and Health Promotion Department extends sincere thanks to the following individuals and organizations that made this event a success: ALHCS Staff Members – Ms. Tashanta Brooks, Mrs. Anita Ruan, Ms. Joya Hodge, Mrs. Joyce Webster Stuart, Mrs. Patsie Frederick Wattley, and Mrs. Shermine Adams. Health Authority of Anguilla staff: Mr. Enascio Harrigan, Mrs. Florence Harrigan, Mrs. Lynette Carty, Mrs. Jennifer Gumbs, Ms. Robertha Campbell, Mr. McMillan Thomas, Ms. Shaniqua Hodge and the staff of the Dietary Unit, Princess Alexandra Hospital. The Department also extends special thanks to Mr. Bernard Wattley who so ably moderated the Quiz for the third consecutive year. Thanks also to Pastor Philip Gumbs for so willingly allowing the Church of God Holiness Sanctuary to be used for the hosting of the Competition. Thanks also to the proprietors of Coral Reef Bookstore, and English Rose Restaurant for their contributions towards this year’s Quiz Competition. We look forward to your support in the future as we collaborate to promote healthy lifestyle behavior among the adolescent population of Anguilla.
