The middle section of the Queen Elizabeth Avenue in The Valley was a scene of much excitement as the 2018 cycle race, part of the Sports Day events of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, got underway way at that starting point, on Monday, February 26, and continued for some hours.
“This is the most anticipated race of the year,” the voice of the announcer, Andy Matthew, boomed over the public address system. Mr. Matthew a physical education teacher, versed in modern languages, kept the excitement of the event to a high degree.
Replying to a question from The Anguillian, he replied: “To be honest, sir, this is what the schoolchildren wait for. They look forward to this race every year. Quite frankly, it is
House rivalry. You see Yellow House think that they have the best riders. Pink House and the other Houses also think they have the best riders.
“So the only time to decide which of the Houses is the best is by this most anticipated race of the year.”
The competitive race for juniors and seniors followed the mass running race last week Thursday, February 22, from the Ronald Webster Park area to Tropical Distributors at Sandy Hill and back. Both events climaxed with the formal opening ceremony of the Annual Inter-House Athletic Competition on Wednesday, February 28.
