The National Disaster Management Committee through the Mitigation Working Group of its Strategic Planning Sub Committee conducted a Hazard Identification & Safety Awareness Training Workshop on Friday March 09th 2018, under the theme, “Workplace Safety, No Better Time Than Now”, The workshop was geared towards Elderly homes and Community Centres and was held at the National Emergency Operation Centre Conference room.

The 17 participants were employees drawn from the Miriam Gumbs Senior Citizen’s home, Brenda’s Tender Loving Care, Rose Wood Centre, the Blowing Point Youth Development Centre, Eleos Centre, West End Community Centre, Pond Ground Centre, Island Harbour care Centre and the Hope Community Centre.

The Facilitators for the training were Messrs. Omari Bourne and Carlisle Lake from the Anguilla Fire & Rescue Service, Kasseem Forde from the Department of Physical Planning, Inspector Chrispen Gumbs of the RAPF and Mr. Alwyn Richardson from the Department of Disaster Management.

The main objectives of the training were to provide methodology for identifying, reporting and monitoring potential hazards and risks, as well as implementing controls and conducting risk assessments in the workplace. Participants were also afforded techniques in developing evacuation planning and the proper use of fire extinguishers. Additionally, participants learned the importance of conducting inspections in the hazard identification and mitigation
process, mitigating against becoming victims of crimes, recognising electrical hazards in the workplace such as faulty wiring, testing of home safety devices and prevention of electrical shocks.

The Mitigation Working Group wishes to thank the Department of Youth and Culture, for partnering in facilitating the workshop and the participants for their attendance, The Working Group will be engaged in a similar training this month for all Pre Schools and Day Care Centres, who are considered to be among the more vulnerable in our communities. The Mitigation Working Group and its partners through the facilitation of these workshops demonstrate our commitment to promoting safe and healthy workplaces, protecting life and reducing injuries from hazards.
