When the Primary Schools’ sports day activities take place later this month, the various competing teams will have already been duly prepared for the events.
This is because the 24th Annual Ashley & Sons Road Relay Race, held on Sunday, March 11, 20i8, was a precursor to a number of those activities.
The event attracted several hundred persons from across the island who braved the hot sun to witness and cheer on the competing athletes from the six primary schools.
Deputy Director of the Department of Sports, Mr. Rollins Richardson, was pleased that his department was continuing to support the Ashley & Sons Road Relay Race as part of the development of athletics in Anguilla. Speaking on behalf of the Director of Sports, Mr. Andre Collins, Mr. Richardson congratulated Ashley & Sons, their sponsorship partner, the Anguilla Amateur Athletic Association, and the athletes for sponsoring and participating in the road relay race respectively.
Mrs. Lorna Kentish-Rogers, said that in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, when things were really looking dismal for track & field sports, it was difficult for us to see our way out in hosting events.”
She continued: “Our parent body, the IAFF has raised some funds to help us during this difficult period following Hurricane Irma. We are being assisted in terms of our preparations for CARIFTA and that allows us, somewhat financially, to be able to hold other events.
“We are asking the business community, as Ashley & Sons has done, to partner with us for other events. This is an Ashely & Sons event, but we really need significant sponsorship for other events.”
The vast crowd and the athletes were welcomed at the event by Mr. Neville Hamilton, Floor Manager at Ashley & Sons.
