It is said that the two greatest days of your life are the day you were born, and the day you find out what your purpose in life is. Your purpose is why you were created. In other words, we were born with a purpose and for a purpose. Purpose gives meaning to life. Dr. Myles Munroe observed that “the greatest tragedy on earth is not death. The greatest tragedy in life is a life without a purpose.” Each one of us was born to solve a problem with the unique gifts trapped within us – that God gave us. You should not allow anyone tell you that you are nobody – no matter your circumstances. It doesn’t matter where you were born. The most important issue is what you came into the world with. You were born to help make the world a better place using your unique talents that God placed inside of you. The problem is, however, that many persons do not know what lies within them and how powerful they are.
What do we mean by the term “purpose”? Purpose is defined as “the reason why a thing exists, it’s the desired result for a thing, it’s the source of destiny”. In other words, purpose is life. It is argued that, “Success is the completion and the fulfillment of the original intent and purpose for your existence.” You can be successful financially with the best educational degrees and living a happy life. However, if your success is not what God planned for your life, then you would not have fulfilled your purpose in life.
We all are loaded with gifts and talents and can do anything abundantly more than we ever imagined. But do you believe that of yourself? Are you allowing what other say about you to control your thoughts and actions? Is this stopping you from being what you were created to be? We have a destiny upon our lives whether we know it or not. Our purpose first and foremost is to fulfill the will of God upon our lives but, in order to do that, we have to know what the will of God is and then begin to follow it. Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in a man’s heart but it’s the Lord’s purpose that will prevail.” This Bible verse is saying that God is more concerned about His purpose for our lives than our own personal plans. Whatever God calls us to do, He will provide for. Whatever you were born to do, is already paid for, and it is only you who can stop that by not allowing God to direct your steps. There are many persons who died not fulfilling their purpose. That is why it is often said that the richest place on earth is the cemetery. “The cemetery contains millions of ideas, visions and dreams that were not fulfilled. It contains books that were not written, songs that were not sung, cars that were not manufactured, buildings and towers that were not constructed.”
No one was given an unfair burden and asked to do more than he or she was capable of doing. There is a false perception that when one speaks of God’s calling and purpose, reference is made to a Minister, Pastor or Preacher in a church. All professions, indeed occupations, are part of the Kingdom of God and are spread far and wide. One can be called by God to be a Nurse, Businessman, Housekeeper, Carpenter, Labourer, Cook, Lawyer, Gardener, Farmer or an Accountant, to fulfill His Will. God expects us to fulfill our calling here on Earth, and we will also be held accountable for how we spent our time. We are not just occupying time and space. We were made to do a specific job for God.
Sometimes a powerful purpose can come about from a crisis or circumstance. In other words, one can be pushed into his or her purpose when tragedies and tribulations occur. Additionally, one may become angry over a situation that is negatively impacting humanity, and the burning desire to help remedy that cause becomes a purpose.
So how do you find your purpose? If you do not know your purpose, and are looking for the reason (s) why you were born, I suggest the following:
You must obey God and allow him to lead and guide you to your destiny.
Ask yourself, is there anything that touches me so deeply that it drives me?
Find out what are you willing to sacrifice for?
Find out who you want to help.
Choose your friends and business associates wisely, who can help to inspire you and bring out the gifts that are trapped inside you.
Finding your life’s purpose can be a life-long journey. It’s okay to take it one step at a time. It’s normal to pause and revisit what your true passion is. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed at times. Nothing in life worth doing is easy but, with the Holy Spirit being your Comforter, you can conquer anything. Whenever you find your purpose, you are unstoppable and unshakable. Do not let people’s opinion of you become your reality. You are destined for greatness to impact the world.
