As part of the orientation activities to mark the launch of the 2017/2018 academic year, the UWI Open Campus Anguilla conducted a special New Student Orientation session at the Site on Monday, 21st August. The Session formed part of a number of online and face-to-face orientation and registration activities geared towards preparing the online students for their new academic journey.
Staff at the Site, as well as the Executive and Members of the local Student Guild were on hand to welcome the new students. Also present at the session was visiting graduate of the Open Campus, Mr. Nick Francis. Francis, who is a Youth Development Activist based in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, congratulated the students on their decision to enrol in the UWI Open Campus. He also shared his experiences working with the Regional Guild of Students and encouraged them to take advantage of the opportunities provided.
Spirited words of encouragement also came from continuing student and 2017 Nominee for the UWI Vice Chancellor Sports Woman of the Year Award, Miss Esther Ward. In sharing her recent experience at the UWI Games, Esther highlighted the networking and other benefits of being part of the UWI family.
Chair of the Anguilla Chapter of the UWI Guild of Students, Miss Kemoloy Murphy also welcomed the new students and outlined the activities and support network established by the Guild to help ensure their success.
Site Staff Miss Tesia Harrigan and Mrs. Arlene Browne-Richardson (both of whom are UWI Open Campus Graduates) also made presentations on the registration process and effective study tips.
Manager for the UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks welcomed the new students and thanked and congratulated them for choosing the UWI to continue their education. “We are particularly pleased with the increasing number of young persons on Anguilla who are choosing the UWI,” she said. “The Open Campus brings the UWI to you and you can be assured that you will receive the accredited world class education that the UWI is known for.” Dr. Fleming-Banks also expressed appreciation to the local Site Staff and the Student Guild Executive for their hard work in ensuring that the new and returning students have a positive experience.
Other Orientation Activities for the 2017/2018 academic year include a Church Service, the official Online Welcome and Matriculation Ceremony, and the annual “Oneness” networking evening with members of other local Student bodies.
