A number of classrooms at Campus B of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School were occupied and attractively decorated by quantities of artwork and other related exhibits on Tuesday, July 25. The occasion was an exhibition mounted by teachers who are being trained at the Anguilla Community College.
Mr. Quincy Harrigan, Director of Humanities and Education at the College, spoke to The Anguillian about the exhibition. “This is the culmination of one of the electives that the teachers are following for the Joint Working Education Associates Degree Programme in Primary Education,” he explained. “There are a number of electives that they have to do. This one is Visual Arts and the culmination is actually an exhibition of the work that they have done during the summer semester of the Community College.
“It provides an opportunity for the teachers to use different materials and creative work. It also gives them the opportunity to be able to see how they can actually utilize this in a classroom setting. It is hoped that in the regular day to day teaching that the teachers would be able to use this creativity in making charts and involving the students – [that] even if they are not arts and crafts or visual arts teachers that they can find use for this material and the experience they have gone through during this course.”
Mr. Harrigan said there were seventeen teachers completing the Associates Degree in Primary Education. The exhibition marks the completion of their first year of study.
The Director of Humanities and Education continued: “As of September next year, the teachers will have some additional courses to follow – and during the coming summer there will also be two other electives that they will follow. These include health and family life education and physical education. These are usually the two electives the teachers should be engaged in the next semester.”
