When 210 children from the primary schools, throughout Anguilla, enter Campus B at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School in September 2017, they would have already known each other having met and interacted at a sporting event at the James Ronald Webster Park.
It was the Annual Grade Six Transition event held on Friday, June 16, and arranged by the school teachers and officials in the Education Department. Undeterred by the gruelling heat of the sun the children, from the six public schools and the privately-run Central Christian School, participated in a number of friendly games under the supervision of the physical education teachers.
Guidance Coordinator for the Primary Schools, Mrs. Vivienne Fleming, speaking on behalf of her fellow counsellors, commented: “We have once again organised our Annual Grade Six Transition activity. It is an arrangement whereby we bring together all the Grade Six students – going to Campus B – for a day of fun, interacting and creating bonds. The aim is to make the transition to the Comprehensive School easier for them. This year we are working in collaboration with the Department of Sports – hence the sporting activities. ”
Among those activities were a new programme called “Run, Jump, Throw”, as well as tug-o-war, both of which were intended to emphasise teamwork.
The activities were preceded by a period of singing led by Mr. John Martin, one of the physical education teachers. Of much significance was a motivational address delivered by Mr. David Christmas, an ordained minister with a keen passion for the overall development of children. He spoke about the importance of teamwork and the need for the students to exhibit good habits of learning and discipline when they transition to their new school environment.
