Esther Ward and Trevor Queeley of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla will be among more than 500 UWI student-athletes from all four Campuses taking part in the 2017 UWI Games at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados from 25th May to 2nd June 2017. This is the second time that the Open Campus is participating in the UWI Games and the first time that athletes from Anguilla will be featured.
Under the theme The Making of Champions, the Games will see the student-athletes competing in some ten (10) sporting disciplines – basketball, football, tennis, swimming, table tennis, track and field, volleyball, cricket, netball and 6-a-side hockey. Students chosen to represent their respective campuses were screened by the Campus Selection Committees and selected based upon their sporting discipline specialty. Esther and Trevor, who are both BSc Management students, were chosen to represent the Open Campus. Esther will be on the Football Team and Trevor will compete in the Volley Ball and Cricket matches. Rounding out the Anguilla contingent for the Games are supporters, Soya Warde-Williams (Treasurer for the UWI Open Campus Guild of Students – Anguilla Chapter) and fellow students, Melvern Hughes and Tomasha Connor.
The UWI Student Games is a biennial tradition of the University of the West Indies which facilitates the competitive, physical and social extracurricular aspect of University Campus life. Through this initiative students are also able to experience life on the sister Campuses and foster new learning relationships.
The opening of the 2017 Games is slated to coincide with the second annual Vice-Chancellor’s Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year Awards on Thursday, 25th May at 3:00 p.m. Esther Ward is among the eleven (11) nominees to be honoured during the Opening Ceremonies which will be streamed live via www.uwi.tv.org or www.cavehill.uwi.edu/videos/livestream.
Students and others in and around Anguilla are also invited to track the progress of the UWI Student Games via the UWI Games App available for download on the Google Play Store App (Android Devices Only).
