One hundred and seventy-five school children will have an opportunity to learn a major part of the island’s modern history through the play “Pepper in dey Soup”, part of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Anguilla Revolution.
The fifth and sixth grade students, as well as students at the community centres, are being provided with tickets for the children’s matinee of the play by a number of sponsors arranged by the Anguilla Tourist Board.
The Tourist Board commissioned local playwright, Mr. Felix Fleming, to write and produce the play. Chairperson of the Board, Mrs. Donna Banks, commented: “The Anguilla Tourist Board is pleased to share the rich history of our people who are proud, strong, and free. After all, Anguilla, as a tourism destination, is more than a bed and a beach. The Anguilla Tourist Board is pleased to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Anguilla Revolution with all the residents and visitors as well as the diaspora.
“We wish to recognise Mr. Felix Fleming for accepting the challenge to write and direct this play…He stuck with it and there was a bit of challenge finding a caste of persons who are actually playing three and four roles. But he and us were determined that we would curate Anguilla’s history for generations to come and to really celebrate with this generation so as to better appreciate where we came from.”
Mrs. Banks said that as a result of an offer by the National Commercial Bank of Anguilla to donate fifty tickets to the Education Department, the Tourist Board was inspired to approach other corporate sponsors. She was pleased that a private citizen, whom she did not name, responded immediately. Offer donors were Flow, ANGLEC, the Anguilla Social Security Board and the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority.
“All the companies caught the vision and agreed to buy 25 tickets to contribute to the Education Department and we are very thankful for that. In all, 175 tickets have been provided for the children including 50 from the Anguilla National Commercial Bank alone. The tickets were presented to the Education Department at the Conference Room of the Anguilla Tourist Board on Wednesday afternoon, May 17.
