Two university athletic coaches paid a working visit to Anguilla over the past weekend (May 18th to 22nd). Dr. Damani Thomas, Athletics Director at Kingsborough Community College and Mr. Leroy Nickie a Physiologist at Howard University, were in Anguilla to assess and provide corrective measures to the island’s track and field athletes. Both gentlemen were impressed with the island’s talent and would like to see the athlete’s levels expanded beyond primary and secondary to the adult level.
If an agreement can be worked out, their long term goal would be to lend assistance in developing the senior pool of athletes that could represent Anguilla in the international arena. To achieve this, targeted programs will have to be developed and implemented along with a uniform training process.
The two gentlemen also held discussions with the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development Dr. Bonnie Richardson Lake. Both spoke about their research program and their collaboration with several professional teams in the United States and Europe. It is hoped that some aspects of this program can be implemented in Anguilla.
Both individuals would like to express their gratitude to the Anguilla Amateur Athletics Federation and Mr. Rollins Richardson for organizing this event. The former would also like to thank Dr. Thomas and Mr. Nicky for so willingly agreeing to share their knowledge and skills with the athletes and coaches.
