The Valley, Anguilla, May 2nd, 2017..….The Anguilla Tourist Board and Sunshine Theatre are proud to announce a special limited-run play, ‘Pepper in Dey Soup,’ as part of the year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Anguilla Revolution of 1967. Art, history and passion align to bring to life the battle for Anguilla’s freedom in ‘Pepper in Dey Soup.’ The title references the infamous threat by Robert L. Bradshaw, the Premier of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, that Anguillans would eat pepper in their soup and bones in their rice for attempting to secede from the Federation.
Written and directed by Felix Fleming, the play traces the political history of the island, explaining the circumstances and context for the Revolution, and culminates with the expulsion of the St. Kitts Royal Police Force on May 30th, 1967. The play brings to life Anguilla’s history, inspiring and reminding us all of the resilience and pride of the people of Anguilla.
‘Pepper in Dey Soup’ will have a limited run in May and early June, with opening night on May 19th at 8:00 p.m. at the Sunshine Theatre in Lone Star, Sandy Hill, the actual site where much of the strategizing for the Revolution took place, and home of the first Anguillian newspaper “The Beacon”. Additional play dates are: May 19th, 21st, 25th, 26th and June 2nd and 3rd. Tickets are EC$50 (US$20). There will be an additional special matinee for school children on May 20th with tickets at a special discount price of EC$20.
‘Pepper in Dey Soup,’ is part of a year-long schedule of special events and promotions under the banner, Anguilla 50, from May 2017 through to April 2018, to attract visitors throughout the year, and promote the culture, history and magic that is the island. Planned events and activities set to take place around the Anguilla 50 anniversary date of May 30th include parades, parties and concerts, cricket matches and, of course, multiple boat races.
Tickets for ‘Pepper in Dey Soup’ are available for purchase at the Anguilla Tourist Board offices, the Anguilla Drug Store and Tackle Box Sport Center.
