It has become a custom during the month of May, and particularly on Anguilla Day, for persons to dress up in the national colours – turquoise, orange and white.
This year, Chief Minister Victor Banks and his ministerial colleagues have teamed up to offer personal cash prizes on May 30th, 2017 Anguilla Day and on May 31st, 2017 Around the Island Boat Race.
On Anguilla Day, the prizes, each worth EC $500.00 will be as follows:
King of the Park – Chief Minister, Hon. Victor Banks,
Queen of the Park – Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Cora Richardson Hodge,
Prince of the Park – Minister of Social Development, Hon. Evans McNiel Rogers, and Princess of the Park – Ministerial Assistant, Hon. Evalie Bradley.
Winners in each category will be awarded for the best/ most creative dress/outfit using the Anguilla Colours.
Judging will take place immediately following the end of the official parade and while refreshments are being served. Persons in each category are not required to pre-register but are asked to indicate their interest to any of the ushers on duty at the Parade. Participants will be required to briefly model dress/outfit before the judges and the wider audience.
It is hoped that this will help to engender wider national pride and promote greater awareness of the use of the national colours.
On May 31st, 2017, it will be turn of the boats and their crews. Minister of Infrastructure, the Hon. Curtis Richardson, will sponsor a EC$500.00 prize for the best attired boat crew using the national colours, while the Parliamentary Secretary the Hon. Cardigan Connor, will sponsor a EC$500.00 prize for the best decorated boat in the national colours.
A Best Decorated Village Competition will also be run during the month of May with judging taking place in early June. A plaque will be awarded which can be competed for on an annual basis. Persons or groups wishing to enter their villages in this competition can register at the Ministry of Home Affairs during normal working hours up until Friday May 19th, 2017.
