The Anguilla Social Security Board has once again demonstrated its commitment to the Malliouhana Poetry Competition. The Board has supported the literary Competition since its launch in 2007 and this week presented the Committee with a cheque for EC$2,500.00 to assist with the Performance Round and Awards Ceremony slated for Wednesday, 3rd May at Andy’s Restaurant in the Quarter.
Speaking at the short hand-over ceremony, Public Relations and Marketing Officer, Mrs. Rosanna Browne said that the Board was pleased to continue the partnership with the Malliouhana Poetry Committee, as the Competition’s goals were commendable and important to national development.
The Competition forms part of the official annual Anguilla Day activities and this year’s theme, “Malliouhana Our Rock … 50 Not Out!” is in recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the Anguilla Revolution. It is organised by the University of The West Indies Open Campus Anguilla in collaboration with the Anguilla Library Service, the Department of Youth and Culture and the Anguilla Community College, with the goal of encouraging literacy and artistic expression, as well as promoting an ethos of social, cultural, and political awareness.
In expressing their appreciation to the Social Security Board, Committee representatives Ms. Jansie Webster, Ms. Tesia Harrigan, Ms. Avon Carty, Ms. Carla Harris and Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks noted that such support has helped to nurture the creative talent on the island and keep the Competition alive. Over the last decade the Competition has attracted more than two hundred entries from over one hundred and fifty (150) poets from all age ranges, and this year the Committee has received some thirty-five (35) submissions. In addition to receiving plaques and other prizes, the winners from the four junior and senior categories will have the opportunity to share their work at the upcoming Anguilla Literary Festival slated for 18th – 21st May 2017.
