The Adrian T. Hazell Primary School held the 5th Annual Teacher Dorotroad1hy Hughes First Class Reading Honours Ceremony on Wednesday 23rd November 2016 at the Bethel Methodist Church, South Hill.
One hundred and twenty-three students from Kindergarten to Grade Six received certificates and reading medals at the highly anticipated ceremony. The ceremony was chaired by Teacher Bonetta Lashley (Teacher of the Year 2015-17) and blessed by Reverend Dr. Wycherly Gumbs. Teacher Shauna Connor, Deputy Principal , gave the welcome and brief remarks. Teacher Glynnesia Franklin gave the overview of the Reading results (2015-16). The results were very critical to the school as benchmarks were set last year (2014-15). A look at the data over the two years has revealed important information (captured in the table below):
HONOURS 2014-15 2015-16
First Class 61% 63%
Second Class 25% 19%
Third Class 14% 18%

Additionally, in 2014-15, 35% of the overall student population was below their reading age, while in 2015-16, the data revealed a six (6) percent decline (29%).
Mrs. Rhonda Connor, Chief Education Officer, congratulated the recipients and their parents for the milestone. She further commended the school for capturing and using the data to make informed decisions regarding teaching and learning. Mrs. Connor expressed words of gratitude to the Hughes’ Family for their annual sponsorship of the reading awards in honour of their loved one, Teacher Dorothy Hughes.
A selection of Grades 5 and 6 students encouraged their schoolmates, and all present, with the song “The Climb”: regardless of our status in life, we must all aim to ‘climb’ and conquer our challenges in order to succeed.
Mrs. Janice Hodge, close relative of the Hughes’ family, gave brief remarks, while Teroadacher Natasha Allwaters gave the vote of thanks. Thirty seven (37) students received second class honours, while thirty-five (35) third class honours. They were with presented their certificates at a Special Awards Assembly at the school.
The principal, staff, parents and students extend sincerest gratitude to all stakeholders for their continued support, guidance and words of encouragement.
