The annual Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School’s (ALHCS) Science Fair was staged from November 21st to 25th. Participants in the 2016 Fair, which was sponsored by Dr. Lowell Hughes, displayed a variety of ideas. Projects were grouped in one of several categories: Life Science, Technical Science, Mathematics, Physical Science, Behavior Science and Environmental Science. Sixty projects were entered and addressed some issues that Anguilla faces. Some looked at alternative energy, cheaper means of purifying water, Productivity of students at the A.L.H.C.S and the quality of locally produced food.
A project entitled, “Protein test” revealed that locally produced eggs have a higher quantity of protein when compared to imported eggs. One student taught herself how to calculate the standard deviation and variance. Students were required to explain in depth the process of preparation and implementation of their projects and many expressed themselves with confidence and enthusiasm. It is evident that the Science Department at the A.L.H.C.S is contributing to the creation of some budding scientists, doctors, engineers and psychologists.
The organisers of the 2016 Science Fair would like to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Lowell Hughes of Hughes Medical Centre for sponsoring the awards for this year’s Science Fair. Thanks to the Science teachers and parents who, in some instances, provided the extra resources needed by some students. A special thank you is extended to all the judges for their invaluable assistance in judging the projects throughout the week.
